Re: What Are You Currently Playing?

Made some more progress in Dragon Quest VIII, specifically I just beat Dhoulmagus. I wasn't exactly surprised to find out there's still more to do, as the game had been telegraphing that he wouldn't actually be the final boss in various way. I had seen some debate on the internet about whether it wa...

Re: What Are You Currently Playing?

The questions at the beginning determine your starting stats. One of the branches does have some requirements for you to be given the choice to take it, partly based on seeing some optional events (it helps to go to various towns and talk to people whenever you have the chance) and partly on your pe...

Re: What Are You Currently Playing?

Also, it's great you still have notes for Growlanser II! I was playing it a little bit a few years ago and I recollect there's a lot of character branches and so forth. There are three major plot branches and then multiple endings for each branch. Some of these depend on choices you make in the end...

Re: What Are You Currently Playing?

If you're trying for a complete game then I'd say take the sword (whereas I'd usually advise someone just trying to beat the game to take the Esper). You can always use the Paladin Shield to teach everyone Ultima. Removing the curse is a bit tedious but if you're going for a full Rage list and such ...

Re: What Are You Currently Playing?

Although I've been trying to make my way through the series mostly in order, I actually haven't played DQ7 yet. I know it's a somewhat divisive entry among DQ fans, partly due to its length, but I enjoyed each of the first six Dragon Quests (even little loved DQ2) and I'm enjoying DQ8 so far. I plan...

Re: What Are You Currently Playing?

As part of my continuing project to play through the Dragon Quest series I've been playing Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King (PS2). I'm about eight hours in and Jessica just joined my party. Otherwise I've completed two dungeons and done a lot of exploring. I really like the world map. I...

Re: Saturn vs. PlayStation

I'm no hardware expert, but that's basically my understanding. The Saturn had very impressive 2D capabilities, with a processor dedicated to the background layers and another dedicated to "foreground" (e.g. sprites). The extent to which the 3D graphics were or weren't an emphasis I'm not e...

Re: What Are You Currently Playing?

I played and beat FF7 for the Switch. Between this and FF9, I have finished two Final Fantasy games in my life. Having the x3 speed really helps. In the past, the endgame of a Final Fantasy would always bog me down and I'd lose interest. This is the problem I've been having in my current playthroug...

Re: In-world sequels and myth building

Huh. I've always meant to try Dragon Quest, in that mythical time when I have time to pick up a new-to-me RPG series. Right now, I think I'll be playing Lunar 1 for the rest of my life. :P I have Dragon Warrior for NES, DQ V-VI for Super Famicom, and I hink DQ8 for whatever it came out on, but I've...

Re: In-world sequels and myth building

My recent forays into the Dragon Quest series have made me think of this topic again, and in particular the connections between the first few Dragon Quest games (after which the series moves on to other settings). The way the series builds its myths tends to be with a light touch, working largely by...

Re: Growlanser 1

I wouldn't be shocked to see the game get a fan translation one day. A number of people have, at one time or another, expressed interest in translating it. In at least one case this did lead to a project, though it ran out of steam before any sort of patch could be produced. Personally I'd love to s...

Re: Finally finished this, mini-review/comparison

My impression is admittedly based a fair bit on speculation/extrapolation as I do believe that when Vic explicitly mentioned return policies in interviews and such it was in the context of WD's shooters. Likewise not having played any of the hacks for comparison, I'm kind of going off of what I woul...

Re: Finally finished this, mini-review/comparison

With the stipulation that I've never played any of the Unworked Designs hacks, my impression from both the lists of changes and from things Vic has said is that often the changes WD made to games during localization were geared toward making the game longer more than anything else, as there was fear...

Re: What Are You Currently Playing?

I got the end of Disc 1 in Final Fantasy IX, and don’t think I’ll continue. Honestly I don’t get the hype. It’s good, but nothing great. It’s odd because it had all the right people (Sakaguchi, Uematsu, and Amano) working on it, but I guess they all collectively weren’t at their best. Well *maybe* ...

Re: Is Mystere a separate character from Leo?

I mean both Lunar 1 and FF4 have white Dragons that are killed (Quark and Rydia's mom's Mist Dragon), a main character that has a costume change (Cecil and Alex), a female lead that gets kidnapped (Luna and Rosa), a giant mechanized weapon that threatens the world (The Grindery and Giant of Babil),...

Re: What Are You Currently Playing?

I beat Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride last night. Between the post game dungeon and wanting to do Bianca and Nera playthroughs, I don't expect to be done playing any time soon, but I'm certainly at a point where I feel comfortable rendering a verdict. To get right to the point, I don't k...

Re: What Are You Currently Playing?

Nearing the end of replaying Final Fantasy VI (SNES), I'm also restarted Final Fantasy IX (PS1) after a long hiatus. Planning to finally finish Cosmic Star Heroine (PS4) and continue Lunar: Eternal Blue (SCD, I've already finished the PS1 version.) I've also been slowly playing through FF9 and had ...

Re: Questions regarding the series

Iwadare is very fond of repeatedly invoking the main theme in other pieces of music for his games. Personally, I rather like it. I know TSS is not Hiroshi Fujioka's only collaboration with Iwadare. While Iwadare is generally recognized as the Langrisser series composer, a number of tracks were actua...
