Who is your favorite?

Who is you favorite character from each game? Simple enough.

For me it's

1:Xenobia
2:Ronfar
3:Ellie
4:Flora

For me all but Ronfar where easy picks .
I was 12 when TSS can out and Xenobia was a video game crush of mine lol

I only played translated rom of the game gear version of walking school and watched the anime short (almost picked Memphis because of his huge head in the short)

I think Dragonsong had going for it was a (mostly) good cast and I like Flora's arc the most. I also like the green hair.

But EB was hard I like Ronfar Hiro and Leo almost the same but in the end Ronfar won because I like the lost faith and becoming a gambling drunk, thenfinding himself by helping others story

Fresca's long been a favorite of mine, possibly because her hair is green in TSS. I also have always liked TSS Jessica. And Mia, who is considerably more self-confident in that game. They all got a bit stereotyped in SSSC. (In general, I liked TSS's versions of the characters better than SSSC's, but EBC's versions better than EB's.)

Ronfar's womanizing really irritated me in EB, but I got to like him better in EBC, where he becomes a competent and loyal friend to Hiro. Leo also really grew on me as the game(s) went on, since he's one of the few who really, truly, grows as a character -- not just realizing that he could rely on friends/stop running from the past/etc as the others do, but having to actually change his worldview and come to terms that he'd been working for the bad guys the whole time while thinking he was an agent of good and justice. That's a bitter pill to swallow, but he manages it. So I'd probably call him my favorite.

I still haven't played much of any version of Magic School, although I did read a translation of the manga years ago. Elie seems like a pretty good character, though.

For Dragon Song, probably Gabryel, who has a pretty heartbreaking job to do. I honestly don't remember enough of Flora to recall her character. Jian, of course, regularly needed thumping to not be an idiot, like most protagonists.

TSS: Ghaleon cause I love John Truitt's and Rokuro Naya's voice acting for him, even though he was over the top theatrically insane, he still had many redeeming qualities. Also Xenobia cause she legitimately wanted to help the Vile Tribe there; she's also a crush of mine. Plus they're both fabulous max.
EB/EBC: Mystere, cause he's probably the most hilarious character in Lunar, period. Also Ghaleon.
MSL: I've only read the manga to completion; the trio of Ellie, Rena, and Senia. I like their group dynamic and friendship.
Never Played DS.

Generally speaking, my favorite characters in JRPGs are rarely the protagonist or the villain. A lot of protagonists of the 90s-00s are the silent type, and even when they break the mold there's a lot of that silence left in them (e.g., even Hiro, whom I generally like, had less development than anyone else). And to be honest, a lot of villains have two-dimensional motivations and are underwhelming (Ghaleon was a big exception, but even one of my favorites like Tales of Phantasia had this problem).

That being said! With Lunar, it's actually hard for me to pick one, since there're often multiple foreground and background characters I really like! So I'm gonna slightly cheat and list like the top two for some. Also, I'm going to combine TSS/SSS, EB/EBC, and WS/MS in this.

For TSS/SSS: Mia and Jessica
Loved their characterization and especially how they developed/strengthened throughout the game.

For EB/EBC: Jean and Leo
Oh I could do an entire novel on how much I love these two... The scope of their development, how much they had to reckon with their past, and how they used that to push through and become their strengths... Also love that strong sense of justice and doing what's right. I might edge slightly for Leo, but it's so hard to pick one over the other here.

For WS/MS: Ellie
This is especially in MS, but from start to end you really see Ellie come out of her shell and become a strong character. Especially when she learns about her background (won't spoil here).

For DS: Ignatius
He came closest to killing Jian early and ending the story prematurely.

For DS: Flora
Eh she was resourceful? That's about all I can think of...

Heh, I think more than once there was dialogue like this:

Flora: All right, to get to [our next destination] we need to do this/go here first.
Jian or Gabryel: Wow! How did you know that???
Flora: I asked someone!

Maybe not so surprising given how bad Jian is at asking anyone for help at any time. Again and again, even after several instances and even a dragon trial emphasizing how he needs to learn to ask for and accept help, he keeps trying to do it all on his own. I'm not sure whether it's ridiculous overconfidence, contempt for other people (not believing that they could possibly help), or what. And then the developers reinforced this by making every other character comparatively useless in combat, sabotaging that whole lesson he's supposed to be learning.

...story woulda been better if they kept the bit where Jian got turned into a frog, and lost the bit where he ever got turned back. Then we could have a buddy-story with Lucia, Gabryel, and Flora roaming about without hand-holding Jian along the way. KF

For Silver Star: Alex. As a kid, getting Alex to become a DragonMaster was very cool. And he has such a dignified pose (not to mention the post battle song is very very cool) and his skills always seemed cool to me.

For Eternal Blue: Lucia. Now, I just love the whole thing about her learning about the world, what humanity is like, what love is and learning to trust/becoming friends with everyone. When I finished the main story, I was completely invested in her character, to the point that once I deduced what her plan was (to leave Hiro and Co and go back to the Blue Star) my first reaction was, "No, I am not letting you stay there, no matter what Im getting her out'. Made me very motivated to play that postgame.

I'm curious, are you basing this more on the GBA game (LL) or the iOS one (SSS)? One thing I've gotten to appreciate about the GBA game is that at least at the beginning several characters are a bit more fleshed out, including Alex. In SSS Nall (and sometimes Luna) does a lot of talking for him, such as telling Master Mel that the diamond has been stolen, but in LL Alex says more of these things himself.

Definitely on LL. While it definitely lacks in cutscenes/voice acting like the other versions I've seen, I did find it to tell the story well enough to hook me up as a kid. Plus the soundtrack was pretty good. I had heard that in older versions he doesn't talk as much (and also that his moveset changes?)

Yeah, Alex definitely talks less in the other versions of the games. Although in the SegaCD game his dialogue was often a couple rows of "............" which was supposed to suggest that he was talking but the exact words weren't transcribed (as opposed to ... ... ... which is more eloquent silence, as when someone else says something bizarre).

Alex's moves in all of the remakes are the same other than the Arts ones in LL, which aren't in SSS at all and are different in the PSP game (HSS). However, they're vastly different in the original game (TSS), as are pretty much everyone's. In TSS he gains the ability to use magic as a storyline element shortly after the diamond is stolen; up to that point he has MP but nothing to use it on, not even sword skills. Aside from a few healing spells, all of his magic is attack magic, including the dragon spells, and he learns nothing similar in appearance to the sword moves he has in the remakes. I specify "in appearance" because in actual game mechanics there was no distinction between different kinds of attack spells/skills; they all did a certain amount of damage regardless of whether they looked to be elemental (Alex's are all "fire" except for the dragon ones) or sword-based or whatever. Because they were basically fixed amounts of damage moderated by the enemies' anti-magic stat -- that is, their effects weren't based on any stat of the caster's -- there were a lot more of them, since levelling up didn't make them any stronger. In fact, the total number of spells across the 10 playable characters is 93, nearly double SSS's 48.

Huh, guess that would make the section in Vane with the room where you can't use weapons easier. Although I usually just grind enough to be able to spam Blast/Swordance all day.

It would, but that restriction doesn't exist in TSS. ^_^ Nor is there any restriction on using items in the Cave of Trial. However, Alex does do the cave alone (because Luna stays on Caldor Isle when he goes to Meribia and is never in the party again), and it's rather difficult to pass the bosses if you haven't levelled up enough to get another attack spell or two.

Incidentally, in SSSC and SSST, there's a trick in the Crystal Tower where if you use a Dragonfly Wing / Warp Wing at the very beginning, it warps you to the other side of the barrier that makes you unequip your weapons, so you can do the dungeon with your weapons still equipped. However, if you walk back to through the barrier and unequip your weapons, you won't be able to reequip them unless you exit and reenter. Of course, if you don't want to use this trick, you can get Alex an extra Fireball Staff to use as an item.

In Lunar: SSSC, I've long found Jessica a favorite. As I recall, early descriptions of her by NPCs vary widely, with Mel considering her a dear daughter but other people observing how much of a rebel she is, or how they don't remember her being at the temple to Althena. Then she is heavily alluded to after she fights with Kyle, creating another stereotype - the spited girlfriend. Meeting her the first time shows someone who isn't quite any of these perspectives, but is rather someone who seeks to take charge of a situation and figure things out. Her assertiveness and decisiveness pull together the disparate stereotypes into someone who actively tries to figure out her place in the world, and I always found her sense of command more interesting than Nash's braggadocio, Mia's quiet reserve, or Kyle's more macho braggadocio.
