There's also CD based Linux distribution that are available such as knoppix, so you wouldn't even have to install anything. I've used knoppix to play around and to recover a crashed computer that wouldn't boot Windows (a virus corrupted my dad's computer's start-up).

There are a couple of other ways you can run Linux to try it out without nuking your existing installation.

Other than the live CD or installing on a separate hard disk or creating a new disk partition, there is Wubi, which lets you install on the same disk partition as Windows and lets you choose what you want to use at boot up. There is also VirtualBox, which lets you run Linux either full screen or in a window at the same time you're running Windows. Both of these are free.
