Julie, in that pic, you look a whole lot like a friend of mine. IM me if you want to see a pic of her, but... wow, the resemblance is uncanny.

And... what blade is that right there, in the orange shirted hand? Nice pic, by the way.

I don't know why -- people don't take pictures of me. I'm usually the guy with the camera.

Anyway, here is what I can dig up. Some of these pictures are about a year old, though -- by old, I mean about a year or so old.

Gotta have blue shades:

Just hangin' with some friends:

Finally, this is my most recent picture. It's of me in traditional garb when I visited India to attend a friend's wedding:

High school, college, or drum corps? Asking as a former marching band
member myself. :)

I wanted to do drum corps, but WAAAAAYYYYY expensive.

thanks for the reply. =D

Cool! :)

I never considered drum corps myself, mostly because I got pretty burnt out after the regular marching band season (3 hours a day of practice for 3 months can have that effect on a guy, I guess).

What instrument do you play? Trombone, here.

WHOA, 3 hours a day?! haha, my band was pretty lenient on group practices. we practiced from 8-noon on saturdays, and we had zero period from 6:45a-7:45-50-ish am. And then some time through the year, we'll set up a sectional schedule until marching season's over. I don't think we had sectionals during concert season.

But yeah, drum corps is HARDCORE, like straight 8 hour practices. O.o great workout, though! Marching, if done right, tones. =D

I played clarinet and bass clarinet, but my passion was drum major-ing. =D I started off on clarinet, and switched to bass 2nd semester freshman year, and had a LOT of fun with it. After that, I still played clarinet on the field, but for parades and for concert band, I played bass.

woo hoo, band. =D

My high school band was run like a mini-drum corps at times. Some of our staffers were also drum corps staffers as well during the high school off-season, which may have influenced how things were run.

Typically, during the 2 weeks before school started, we'd have band camp (although we didn't have a real "camp" -- it was on our high school grounds and we'd go home at tne end of the day). Monday-Thursday, 6 hours a day (3:00 PM to 9:00 PM) with a 1 hour dinner break in the middle.

Once school started, we'd practice from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM on Monday and Wednesday, and 2:30-5:00 PM on Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday (though Friday's sometimes would be cut a little short if we were going to perform at a football game that evening). Once we got close to the first competition of the year, we'd get Mondays off, but we would have 3 or so hours of practice on the weekends before we head off to the competitions.

Finally, we'd get a break after the season ended in early November. We'd still have the Tuesday and Thursday practices just to keep in tune for football games, and then we'd be completely done with marching season after Thanksgiving.

Of course, things would heat up again come spring if we're doing any kind of travelling for an out of the region competition...

But yeah, drum corps is HARDCORE, like straight 8 hour practices. O.o great workout, though! Marching, if done right, tones. =D

Yeah. :) That's why I never wanted to do it. I had enough trouble with our 3 hour practices. :)

Hehe, cool. :) I contemplated trying out for drum majoring, though never too seriously (I was one of the worst marchers my freshman year, but I was fairly competant by the time I graduated). Personally, I enjoyed staying out of the spotlight more and staying out of the drum major cliques (we had 3 drum majors -- a head and two sub majors) that seemed to always form in my band. Besides, unlike the drum majors, we got to ride on the cool bus to competitions, hehe.

wow, that's cool. we didn't have a 'cool bus'. we had a senior bus every once in a while.

but yeah, i was a stand out drum major, i don't think you could've compared me with most others or even with the ones from my school's past.

Our band camp was a week and a half of 8-noon practices and then 5 days in the mountains for fun and practice. it was a lot of fun, for sure.

we had plenty of drum corps people on staff (especially this past year), but we did things a lot differently than most other schools. there's definitely something different about us. We don't practice as much as some other schools, but we still deliver great results. it has a lot to do with the leadership and just the family atmosphere of the band.

i miss marching band, but i'm kinda glad that i'm out cuz... i don't think i could work with this year's leadership

Heh, a much better picture than the few of me as drum major photo were. Then again, it didn't help that it was just after a parade and I coulcn't stand to have the stupid shako on any longer. Had the same kind of mace, though, borrowed from an alumnus (still have it, 15 years later...). It was kind of amazing that we found a uniform to fit me, since the previous drum majors had been quite a bit bigger and taller than I, but we found one that had probably been last used in the 70s. :P

Our band was tiny, though. And I do mean tiny -- 13 people my first year. We were a lot bigger by my senior year, but still probably under 50. I was only DM for the last semester, because we changed directors every year and the one that year had just kept the DM from the year before rather than having tryouts again. :P It was hard to get the real marching band experience with those two conditions of size and ever-changing directors. My junior year we were sharing a director from our rival high school, which made for some interesting situations. Grr.

I would have liked to do drum corps, but I played the wrong instruments. :( My cousin did corps, though. Hm, I wonder if he wants his DCI 1988 finals videotape back.

Spent five years in the Cal Band (University of California Marching Band, for long) and kind of miss it, but the politics got to me after a while. It's entirely student-run except for the director, who doesn't have much more control than any other member of the executive committee. I talked with the UCLA band director about this once (at my cousin's wedding), and he just kind of laughed and shook his head, clearly thinking that having the students have so much power was nuts.

Edit: Just as a humorous addendum, today I got a PM at another board from someone who had made that account solely for the purpose of contacting me -- he'd been Googling for lyrics to a particular Cal Band song and turned up a post I'd made at the other board mentioning the song, and after reading some of my posts there figured that I'd been in the band the same time as he was. So he asked who I was and if I remember the rest of the song. Which I mostly do, and I remember him too; we were newmen together. Heh.
