I bought it today.
I watched it today.
I loved it.

You just can't go wrong with a Studio Ghibli movie!

Anyone else see/buy this movie yet? I think Spirited Away is still my favorite, but I have yet to purchase six of them. Must... buy...

It's about a girl named Sophia, who encounters a Wizard. And the Witch of the Waste becomes jealous, because she wants the heart of the Wizard. So she puts a curse on Sophia that turns her into an old woman, and she is unable to talk about the curse. So Sophia sets out to break the curse.

It is a wonderful movie. All the characters, music, and the art. It's kinda nice to watch an animated film that is still almost completely animated, if it's not completely. Sometimes I couldn't quite tell.

If you've seen any of the other movies, you'll love this one.

Ah, Studio Ghibli... how I love them. Also, the movie's based on a book by the same name, written by Diane Wynne Jones.

Honestly, despite a lot of fans treating this movie as a bit of a disappointment after Spirited Away, I prefer it. I guess I felt that characters in Spirited just weren't as interesting, and while it was still a great movie, it's not one of their best in my books. (Although, I still liked it better than Nausicaa...)

As for other Ghibli movies, some of my favorites are Only Yesterday, Grave of the Fireflies, Kiki's Delivery Service, Laputa: Castle in the Sky, and Porco Rosso. (Although, it still seems like that's too short a list. I pretty much like anything they put out, with the exception of My Neighbors The Yamadas, which I haven't seen...)

I almost forgot that it's out now! I should go out and get it before it slips my mind again.

I'm really glad I read the book before I saw the movie, and I recommend it to anyone who enjoyed the movie. It's a fast read, very enjoyable, and helps fill in some of the gaps in the movie. Miyazaki has gotten into a bit of trouble here and there for the liberties he takes when working off of source material (Kiki's Delivery Service in particular). While the author of Howl's Moving Castle was pleased with the film and quite impressed with Miyazaki personally, the movie is very different from the book.

I like all the movies for somethin' different, I don't really think of them as just another Ghibli movie. There's some little quirk about each one that I just kinda cling too.

I actually feel the same way- I tried to list my favorites, and nearly had half their movies in there before I realised it just wasn't possible.

I greatly approve of this movie. Studio Ghibli, like Pixar, continues to deliver good stuff.

This was yet another gem from Studio Ghibi, I have yet to pick it up though... thanks for reminding me it was out! I often times fall behind in movie releases (and I really should have remembered this one! It was a wonderful film!).

I was a fan the book before the anime was made. So I was incredibly excited when I heard Miyazaki was making it into a movie two years ago. It's an okay movie, but it's pretty different from the book, and I HATE the dub.

Christian Bale just completely ruined Howl for me. I swear he gave the poor boy throat cancer. e_e And I can't stand how whiney and weak Sophie is in the movie, she's a much stronger character in the book than how she's portrayed in the movie.

Anyway, over all, this movie's okay. When it's subbed. xD I think I liked Spirited Away a little better too, but I can only watched that when it's subbed as well. Why does Diney/Pixar insist on slaughtering the Miyazaki movies that they dub?? >__>; Why don't they get some real voice actors instead of some flashy big name actors who don't normally do voice over? I hate John Lasseter with a firey passion. But that's a different subject that I won't touch upon. :roll:

Let's hope Earthsea turns out to be better. *Crosses fingers*

Wooow. I'd been thinking about the sub argument the other day when I went to watch Record of Lodoss War dubbed. Not quite as good as I remembered, my standards may be raising.

I've never minded the dub versions made by Disney. I had no complaints about Christian Bale or anyone else. And when I listen to the sub... well, I always like it too. And even the French dub that came with Princess Mononoke... I really enjoyed that too.

But I guess I just say this because... what do you consider a good dub? ^^;;; I have some friends that would say, 'No DUB! EVAR!' but... it sounds like you know a few.

I like to watch my anime subbed.

People go on and on about disliking dubs and they usually show some valid reasoning, but I think it MOSTLY has to do with the fact that you had seen it subbed first.

There are exceptions, though. Try watching Street Fighter 2 The Animated Movie in japanese..it is truly horrid.

I'm not against dubbing by any means. Voice actors are a huge interest/hobby/passion of mine, so I actually like listening to dubs. xD It's just that I tend to dislike the Miyazaki dubs because I usually see the subbed version first, and there's usually such a drastic difference between dubbed and subbed Miyazaki movies.

A few examples of what I consider to be a 'good dub':

+ Princess Mononoke (The fact that Disney and Pixar didn't dub this might have something to do with it being a good dub.)
+ Fruits Basket
+ Lunar Games

+ Kingdom Hearts games
+ Naruto (with a couple exceptions.)
+ Trigun
+ .Hack//SIGN
+ FLCL
+ Digimon. xD

When I compare subbed and dubbed anime, I listen to the quality of the voices and the acting. I don't concentrate on translation as much. For an example, part of the reason why I hate the Spirited Away dub for Chihiro's voice actress. The girl's voice is more annoying than anything and I think she does more screaming than acting. >__>; But that's just my opinion. The Japanese VA of Chihiro is more calm and not as high pitched, she's easier for me to listen to. xD

Anyway, I'm open for both subbed and dubbed anime. I don't have a preference, I just like to watch the one that sounds better. xD

I admit that while thinking of adequate dubs from the Miyazaki films, I only really fixated on Princess Mononoke. I might've also picked Nausicaa, but I've never listened to it completely on the Japanese track, so I wouldn't be able to judge fairly.

Possibly. Last semester in a club we watched... oh, terrible memory right now, but it's a guy's name, and takes place at a school, and this guy is around while various people work out their issues... what a generic description. XD But it was subbed, and I enjoyed it... it might be less natural to see a dub after that.

I'm fond of Disney's dubs as well- in fact, the only major problems I've ever had with their dubs were intirely script related. All the voice actors are fine, but try watching through a Ghibli DVD with the dub voices and the subtitles on. I can't honestly vouch for any others, but I know Laputa had some drastic changes made to it, hopefully it's the only one.

The only thing about Lodoss dubbed is the horrible lyrics to the opening theme. The song is gorgeous, but woooow, talk about cheese.
