To be honest, I had hope when I saw A Sense Of Purpose in my mailbox with a note asking me to review it, but that faded way too soon, after the second song on the album, actually. The album starts off strong and then fades into mediocrity. I don't know why I always hope that the next In Flames album will be better than the last, because it never is. I will say that this album has a more melodic death metal feel to it than any of their albums have had for years, but it is also tinged with shades of severe down tuning. The songwriting also seems to be skewed and less mature than it used to be. My final verdict is that this album is better than most metal albums will be this year, but it's still only par for the course. It's like Reroute to Remain, but worse.
Save your money and wait for the new Opeth album to drop.
