The Bond film...and the woes it may bring

Post by Roas Atrades »

Well, I've been a Bond fan since I was in single digits of age. IMHO, Sean Connery is the man and will always be Bond, but I've still been able to enjoy all the other incarnations.

But with this new version of Bond, Dan Craige, I must say I am worried for the first time about the continued existence of the franchise. Among many things that make me squeemish about the latest movie, this newest bit of info I read today makes me wonder if I will go see it at all, since I wonder if I will recognize it as a Bond movie.

Casino Royale is of course an original Flemming story, which means its at least got that going for it. However, I read today that the director...in his desire to update and make it "hip" has changed what is a classic Bond motif. Instead of having Bond play Bacerat....now Bond will be playing Texas Hold 'Em.....

Now some people might not see this as a big deal, but to me this seems like more Entertainment conformity in order to simply pull in more viewers. Directors are entitled to their visions, but to cut away a part of a classic franchise to be hip just seems wrong to me.

Gambling may be gambling no matter how you do it, but in the world of Bond, Bacarat had that classy, gentleman feel to it that is James Bond.

Texas Hold 'Em Poker.....just doesn't IMO :P

In the end, I guess I just have to maybe move this to the list of things that have been bastardized, like classic GI Joe and Transformers, for the sake of being hip to the current culture climates, haha.

If you are concerned about things changed from the Bond books, you can simply add that one to the list. I haven't read them myself, but I've heard there have always been things changed from the books, from some of the clothes Bond likes to wear to "shaken not stirred"

Not from the books, since I don't read them. My parents have read them and say that and differences from Flemming or the other guy that took them over are not that significant.

For me it's a lack of a sense of style that entertainment just seems to be drifting away from. It just concerns me that more and more the industry just wants to cater to whatever is the current "It" fad than rather aspire to attain a higher level of quality, which has been deteriorating. I guess it just makes me sad that movies are becoming less and less entertaining for me because I feel like I'm having pop culture crammed down my throat.

Movies are pop culture. And switching to texas hold em isn't exactly cramming pop culture down your throat. It would be more like that if they were pushing the texas hold em championships or something like that in the movie. Switching the games is simply switching to somebody more people will recognize and relate to.

But personally, I think the Brosnan Bond movies started good with Goldeneye and just went downhill from there. World is Not Enough was just a horrible horrible movie and I skipped the one after because of it. It's not Brosnan's fault but rather that they just don't know how to make a good Bond movie any more. It's that reason that the new Bond movie may suck, moreso than the switching of a casino game. That's my take on it anyway

I don't mean that the changing of the game will ruin the movie alone. My point is that it's just one symptom of why the Bond franchise is going down hill. I'm just glad I can put Goldfinger or Thunderball in my DVD player whenever I want.

Ugh... Main reason I don't like that is because I find Texas Hold 'Em to be a very lousy game. The only reason it's popular is because it's more fun to watch, hence it's 1) more popularized, and 2) more familiar because it's more popularized. Personally I'd rather be playing seven-card.

But yeah, besides that, it does detract from the 'gentlemanly' feel of Bond. I gotta agree with Roas on this, it seems like a bad change. It'd be like if he ditched the British accent. KF
