The first anime I ever saw was the original Dragonball when they showed only the first part of the series.

Then came Dragonball Z, and the first thing I thought was, "Okay, something's missing here.

My first true taste of anime though, was the stuff on Toonami, sadly.

Yeah, I never got out much. :P

Anyway, my favorites are:

Dragonball/DBZ (First I ever saw, so they hold a candle)
Robotech
Outlaw Star
Tenchi
Project A-ko
Blackjack

That's it for now.

I don't really have a definitive favorite series, but here are some top grade anime:

Gungrave
Hajime no Ippo
Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust
Ah! Megmai Sama!
Cowboy Bebop
Rurouni Kenshin: Tsuiokuhen
Great Teacher Onizuka
School Rumble
Full Metal Panic: Fumoffu
Crest of the Stars

This is just personal preference, but I can't watch dubbed anime. Most often times than not, the dubbing is horrendous. The only exception I've see to this is Mononoke Hime (Princess Mononoke), but that was mainly due to the fact that they hired Hollywood Actors for the voices. If you've only watched the dubbed animes, you are missing out big time. Anyways...

Gungrave: Anime about syndicates. First half is brilliant. Ending rocked.

Hajime no Ippo: Boxing anime. You don't have to be a boxing fan to enjoy this one. It's almost for anyone really. Great music, story, characters, and laugh out loud hilarity.

Vampire Hunter D: One of the best vampire movies, ever.

Ah! Megami Sama!: Similar to Tenchi but offers so much more. Don't forget to watch the movie. Music is top notch by Final Fantasy compower.

Cowboy Bebop: Unless you've been living under a rock, this is THE anime.

Rurouni Kenshin: Tsuiokuhen: One of the best OVAs in existence. Top notch qualty. Story, music, everything is good. Very gory.

GTO:: Very good anime. Story is unbelievably good, about teaching. However, the 2nd season is pretty much poo. Watch the anime first, then read the manga. Manga owns.

School Rumble: Freaking Hilarious. One of the funniest animes out there. At first it was hard to get into, but man I'm glad I stuck with it. It's a rollercoaster ride of humor.

Full Metal Panic: Fumoffu!: Another great comedy OVA. You'll get more out of the anime, if you've watched the original FMP, but either way, it's funny as all heck.

Crest of the Stars: It's not the end-all-be-all of anime some people may make it out to be, but it's pretty good. Scifi.

You cannot go wrong with any of these choices. And like I said before, get the subbed versions. You'll thank yourself for it.

You know, except for the Gundam stuff and various other things I haven't seen yet, you and I like a lot of the same shows... :)

In my case, I was lucky in that I saw dubbed versions of classic 1970's giant robot anime as a kid (including Getter Robo G, the prequel to Shin Getter Robo and Getter Robo Armageddon). That's probably why I like a lot of other giant robot shows you didn't list, like Danguard Ace, Gaiking, New Gaiking, Grandizer, etc.

Yeah, those were a couple of my favorites as well. I'm also psyched about all the updated sequels to those classics that have been coming out recently.

Mazinkaiser is very good -- not exactly great, but it's still a fun ride. Koji Kabuto is definitely an awesome mech pilot, however -- the job he does piloting Mazinkaiser does make up for any of the show's other weaknesses. :)

Sorry to ask kind of an OT question, but didn't Kubooka do the character designs for Giant Robo? I thought I heard that from somewhere but I've never seen the show.

Yes, he did. I need to get the show from Netflix myself at some point (though it's not quite my cup of tea -- Giant Robo features remote-operated giant robots. I prefer the piloted variety myself). Still, by watching it, you can definitely recognize Kubooka's style.

If you're a fan of mecha, you've got to watch TEKKAMAN: BLADE! I'm by no means a mecha fan, but unless you've seen Tekkaman, you haven't experienced all that mech anime has to offer. It is a very old series, the animation sucks, and it's sometimes boring to watch. The story is what keeps it going, so check it out. They reuse every frame of animation multiple times to the point of disgust. But what's an old school anime without reusing frames?

I'd also suggest Marsian Successor Nadesico. Story sucks except for the beginning and near the end. It's worth watching just for those 2 parts.

BTW, has anyone ever played the PS game "Space Griffon VF-9"? It's an exceptionally stupid game that plays horribly, but the story is pretty good. Being released in the first year of the U.S. PlayStations debut, don't expect too much.

I think I've seen some of it -- wasn't it hacked and dubbed on TV as "Teknoman"?

Unfortunately yes. They butchered Tekkaman Blade into the putrid, pilth that was known as 'technoman'. *Shudders*

Well, been a while so might as well as post my current anime I like. Not to say I don't like any others, just this is the newest addition to the anime I love.

Samurai Champloo. I tried not to watch it, I saw one part a while back and didn't like it, but damned if I didn't end up seeing an episode from beginning to end, and I fell in love with it...
