Considered getting it, but I'll probably pass. I'm backlogged on too many games, and also when I heard it's something of a dating-sim/RPG that dropped my enthusiasm a lot. I can't get into games that revolve around a bunch of female characters all being attracted to the same male protagonist.

It is an ok game...the graphics are awesome and the sounds is really cool...but its all text and based on moving either left or right...not really the free will you get in most RPG's.....i stopped playing it.

I got it a few days ago and I love it. I really enjoy the battle system, the characters, graphics, sounds and music. And I think the simplistic dungeons are just fine, as I play GBA out of the house most of the time. When I played Lunar Legend, those long dungeon crawls on a handheld just got me bored. Felt better suited on the console version. Riviera made dungeon navigating quick and simple.
To those worried about it being too dating sim-ish... it's not like the girls are all infatuated with the main character. They all band together for a common cause, but you can be extra nice to any of the girls if you like them alot, with simple things like saying the right thing, or letting her get the finishing hit in a battle, etc.
Anyways, to anyone who wants the game, I say get it soon because limited copies were made. Only one major game store in my state was carrying it o_O;

Seeing as Lunar: Dragon Song is borrowing a number of this games concepts when it comes to exploration and battle, I say the topic creator may have a point. Riviera is unique and it is NOT a dating sim in any concievable way. This game doesn't fall back on love, but rather, friendship and it just so happens that the bulk of your party just happens to be girls. The game has a fabulous soundtrack (Sakuraba inspiration is written all over it) and the game's length is proper for the content driven. The game took me about 18 hours to complete which is perfect; a super long game would've killed the replay value as they're many reasons for players to feel compelled to venture through the game again.Aaron wrote:As to it being the future of RPGS? The story is nice and should keep the player interested long enough to continue. Really, there is A LOT to talk about when recommending Riviera but I'll just say do the research and don't base your opinion on one public review. Look at the user opinions as well. This game is fantastic and becoming very rare right now so get it while you can.
I just got Riviera 2 days ago.
I haven't got a chance to play it yet because I'm trying to finish up Fire Emblem: Sacred Stones, but I also think it looks promising and might very well be the future of RPG's.
I had to go to 3 Game Stops before I could find Riviera because it was sold out everywhere! I sure hope it lives up to my expectations. There was only a limited quantity of this game made, so get it while it lasts!

Hmmmm...
Riviera: The Promised land was a pretty good RPG. Not mind-blowingly good, but it was enjoyable. I think the game got a bad reputation from some of the reviewers and the ESRB rating system though. First off, there really isn't a reference to sexuality in the game, nor is there any reference to drugs (Bath scenes are NORMAL in Japan, and mushrooms just don't cut it as a kind of drug.) The whole "dating system" idea is inaccurate too, in my opinion. The female characters just join you to fulfill a common goal. While you can be noticeably nicer to a particular character, it really doesn't change that much.
Want to know what it changes? It is a spoiler... but I'll tell you if I must.

The character you've been nicest too will effect the ending the most. As in, they effect the situation leading to the final battle, and the last scene in the game. There really isn't any direct method of saying it is some sort of love game. In fact, it resembles ToS's system more.

It really isn't a "dating RPG". I was meant that that was a common misconception with this particular game. The whole "relationship thing" works similarly to the one seen in ToS. It is more of a matter of how much you are friends with the character. I really haven't seen any big references to romance.
