"Tales Of" gaming series - Reminds me of Lunar.

Post by Greensky »

I don't know why but lately I've been reminded of Lunar every time I see a "Tales Of" game. The art from the opening scenes seem very similar to me for some reason. On the new Tales Of game that just came out, they have some singing spells that you use in battle and they do the voice singining, reminded me of Luna of course.

Oh and Tales of Symphonia kind of had that whole love theme going for it.

It's just nice to have an ongoing series that reminds you of another great series.

RPGs altogether seem to have a love theme in it.

I am getting sick and tired of RPGs pertaining to saving someone, dealing with a corrupt government or both.

I do love both series', though.

Well, that kind of leaves out a majority of RPGs then. The only other RPGs I know of that arn't about saving someone or stopping a corrupt government is Morrowind and Pokemon.

I kind of think that more RPG's should have a lesser theme. A more believable theme as opposed to saving the entire planet/galaxy. I think that even if you're main objective is to show up another person or get ahead of them, it would still be a great game if presented in the right way.

Oh well... what are you gonna do. I did like Xenosaga Episodes I - III, and they do save the entire galaxy.

RPG games like Pokemon for example is a great theme. Your only objective is to become one of the best trainers from your island.

I very much enjoied the "Tales Of" series (or rather what I've played of it) and I've never really minded the generic themes most RPGs have to offer. However, I am not adverse to something new and different when it comes to an RPG. I'll definitly give any RPG a try since they are the most fun games to me. ^^

Harvest Moon! Well, perhaps you mean with the other RPG aspects, a battle system and all that.

I'm not sure how the right way would be. Perhaps a sort of Lord of the Flies-type adventure?

The fact that Tales of Symphonia reminded me of a lot of other RPGs is why I hated it so much. :x It seems as though they took an idea from every great RPG, threw them all together and melted it into one horrible cliche RPG. I found it boring as all get out too. And maybe Lunar spoiled me, but I expected more than two animated cutscenes from ToS.

I'm just really disappointed in that game. Kinda regret that I spent money on it. >_>;

Oh! I love Harvest Moon! I started with the 64-version and have been in love with the series ever since. Its not often that a game comes along that just makes me smile. No aggervation, no pressure, just a good time. I recall Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door having the same effect on me. =)

Me too! That was something that really made me sad. Heck I bought the game initally because I thought there were going to be anime cutscenes! Imagine my dissapointment. =P
I still enjoied the game though. Even though, yes I found I could predict what was going to happen along the storyline...

Learn japanese and get the Playstation 2 version that the U.S. never got. There are several more cutscenes in it.

also, You'd LOVE Xenosaga and FFX.

I really havn't played any RPG's recently with any good cutscenes in it. I don't count Xenosaga because... well it's just gaming graphic cut-scenes mostly. I'm talking about... what do they even call them? Animated or CGI/FMV cut-scenes?

Tales of Symphonia had great anime cut-scenes for the title screen beginning intro... but that was it minus the ending scene of the game and the 2 second tower scene at the beginning. If they'd have simply just incorporated those scenes into the game itself as you progressed (longer versions of course), it would have been such a better game in my eyes.

Thank god FF XII is coming out in a matter of weeks. That will fill my desire.

Oh and... speaking of Harvest Moon. The newest one (Magical Melody) for Gamecube is the best Harvest Moon game by far. I used to like the 64 version the most, now it's this new one.

Yes! I was hoping Magical Melody was good... I just got it for my birthday, and I've been waiting for a good time to play it. This weekend will be good.

I think that in-game storytelling is perfectly fine. Xenosaga does it really well, as do a few other games. As for actual animated cutscenes... few and far between. Phantasy Star 4 had nice cels they used frequently. Some Square-Enix games use them some, but for a long while they weren't voiced, and were sparse. (Chrono Cross, FF8.)

But I can't think of another game with as many animated cut-scenes. Ys: Ark of Naphistim did, but there wasn't much (and they had to be unlocked, otherwise they were CG).

Yay! ... I've been eyeing Paper Mario for a while now. Maybe during winter break I'll play it. :)

Yes Sonic# Paper Mario was a great game! I highly reccomend it. In fact I have played through it a couple of times now because it was that enjoyable. ^^

Is it really? I bought it when it came out but I haven't had a chance to get to playing it! Nice to know that when I do it'll be awesome. =)

Yeah, Magical Melody really has everything you'd ever want in a Harvest Moon game. I can't imagine Natsume making a better one any time in the near future.

It has that great Harvest Moon 64 feel to it, but with so much more. You can pick your starting land (out of 3 original land selections). One property is close to a river for fishing, one is close to the wilderness/wood and had a larger area for building on, and the other is actually in the town itself, all of those lands with different soil types.

But as you progress through the game, you can buy all those properties and so many more. The town progresses as you accomplish things in the game, and as time passes. It has an actual story this time that has a real "ending" (but you can play after of course).

I could go on, but then the post would be too long. Just try it out asap :D

Neat! I've been waiting for another game that would have that "64" feel to it, since that is currently my favorite game in the series. I should probably make time to get started on it!

MM -does- have that feel to a certain extent, but I honestly think it's missing the best thing about 64, which was the sense of community. In 64 and BTN, I cared about the villagers, I loved getting events with them, and I wanted them to like me. MM is better for this, but still not as good. I wish they'd make just one game where they focus on the story of the growing relationships of you and the villagers, rather than gimmicky mini games and special items.

That's dissapointing... I did love the village intereactions... I wanted more in the 64 version (because I ended up playing for so many years I ran out of them!) but that game was awesome... I have hoped that they would once again capture the essance of that in future releases but have been dissapointed. Yes I did like some of the new ones, but they just didn't give me that same happy feel the 64 version did. Ah well, but if MM is still really, really good I still want to give it a shot (since I have the game and haven't really played it yet.).

Tales of Phantasia (GBA)

Post by DevNall »

I just picked up "Tales of Phantasia" for the GBA and it's pretty good -- I like how different the battle system is. However, I was sad they removed the opening vocal song (which is present in all the Japanese versions, including the SNES one!).

Mostly for things at school to calm down so I'll have time to play games! That should be soon-ish I hope... as I've been really, really busy as of late. ^^**
