Corpse Party

I got this game last week, and I can't stop playing it. It's a port of a game from 1996 and plays like an RPG, but there's no combat and the focus is on the story and exploration. You switch roles between groups of kids who are all trapped in a haunted school, except they are on different planes of existence so they aren't together, but there is some overlap. For example one kid hears a scream but when they go to it's location no one's there, then later you play as the screaming kid and it makes sense.

The audio was recorded using 2 mics which gave it really good surround sound, but what gets me is that it looks like a cutesy jrpg at times, but then there's some of the craziest, goriest, messed up stuff I've ever seen in a game. There is a ghost of a child you encounter who's head was stabbed until 2/3 of it was removed, and other ghosts also have violent backstories. The main story itself branches depending on where you go and what you do, and the main characters can die, but in some cases they can also be saved.

It's a pretty fun game overall, and since you can't fight back it does have a bit of a clocktower vibe to it. The only problem I've seen is that there's no way to skip text, so if you die and reload you have to sit through 5 minutes of dialogue before you try again which can be annoying.

Anyway I'm just curious to know if anyone's played it here and what their impressions are.

I'm sorry to say this, but I am no fan of Corpse Party. There's absolutely no action in it whatsoever and it's borderline anime porn. This is just me, but I think Corpse Party is just about as garbage a game as we can get. If these are the kind of games we are going to be getting from localization companies in the future, I won't be buying. Fatal Frame kicks Corpse Party's butt in every way and if you have a Fatal Frame title in your game library, you'd be better off giving one of them another playthrough.

I've never played Fatal Frame, but I've heard it's a little like Clocktower in the sense that you really have no defense and are just running unlike Resident Evil or Silent Hill where you can usually shoot whatever is after you. The anime voices in Corpse Party annoy the hell out of me, but I like the exploration aspect of it, and that same "just run" mentality. Though now that I've had more time to play through it the novelty of a retro survival horror game wore off and I still like it, but no where near as much as when I first started playing. They also make you do very random sequences to advance and sometimes the only way to know what to do is to try trial and error over and over or look it up in an FAQ.

Seriously, what's up with that? Anyway, whoever is choosing games to be localized over at XSeed needs to be fired. I'm tired of stateside localization companies bringing us gimmicky games like Corpse Party and Wii Fishing Resort... There are so many good games in Japan and this is the best they can come up with?

But, like I said before, try Fatal Frame. I highly recommend it. It's a robust horror game and the cool thing about it is that you don't have a slew of weapons like Resident Evil. Having only a camera do deal with monsters sounds kind of cheesy at first, but it works surprisingly well. And looking through a camera eye slot to find the evil spirits is like having tunnel vision when everything is out to get you. You can probably see a bunch of stuff on youtube, too. The graphics are also insanely awesome for PS2.

I actually enjoy the imports of so-called gimmicky games, which I find delightful because they're relatively easy for this time-addled gamer to get into, while also being cute, quirky, and otherwise good-humored. Corpse Party looks like a fairly good example of that, though the descriptions of the more disturbing elements remind me somewhat of The Binding of Isaac, another game that I've heard recommended. If I get a chance to play CP, I'll let you know.

While not time-friendly necessarily, this is also why I looked forward to the release of Fortune Street, a game that I might just buy today.

I'm also allergic to hyperbolic claims of badness, especially with a Metacritic rating of 76.

I couldnt disagree with you more. Ive finished this game and want more! Its very story driven and damn right addictive. But i also love horror movies and loved fatal frame and clocktower series.

This game was picked for localization by their president after Tom L. got the office of xseed addicted to it. i think he made a awesome choice and hope they do the sequels.

what about it was porn like tho? i somehow missed that.
