Sonic The Hedgehog
I remember that one from back in the Sega days... *good times ^_^*
Anyway, now I hear there's a new reamped version of the old Sega game, Sonic The Hedgehog. In full 3D and the most expansive Sonic game to date.
If it's already out and you've played it, please tell me how it is
If it's not out, then... I'll just look up the date it does come out.

Actually I have a question about this game as well. I've loved the Sonic games for a long time now and after seeing the previews for this one I have been excited to get my hands on it. I just haven't been able to find out for sure whether it is comming out for the Wii or not. I've heard yes and no from multiple sources, anyone here know for sure?

Supposedly
Supposedly it's god awful crap. Not a so so game, or mediocre. But in fact total garbage.

Remember with video game reviews a 5 is really a 2, a 6 is really a 4, a 7 is really a 5-6 (average) an 8 is really a 7-8ish and a 9 is really 9-10. Game reviews are frequently far more positive than reviews of say music or movies since reviewers for both websites and magazines risk upsetting potential advertisers and companies that support them by giving reviews that are extraordinarily low regardless of how crappy the game may be. When a game like Sonic scores in the low 40s on average you know it's horrible.

The 3D Sonic game on XBox 360/PS3 is fairly different; it's more like another Sonic Adventure than the original game. It also hasn't been fairly received.Maiku wrote:I remember that one from back in the Sega days... *good times ^_^*

If you want a Sonic game that's as awesome as the old ones, get "Sonic Rush" for the Nintendo DS. It's the only one (out so far) that most of the old school fans seem to like.
(Sega actually released a port of the original Sonic for the GBA, but the port wasn't handled very well.)
There is a Sonic game coming out for the Wii, but it's a different game. It's called Secret of the Rings and there's a preview video on Sega's site. (It's not out yet.)YoshiMars wrote:Actually I have a question about this game as well. I usually only look on Gamespot, as IGN tends to give every game a bad rating that I know of.
~Sonic the Hedgehog~
We Say(Gamespot): 4.4/10
You Say(Players): 7.0/10
They Say(Producers): 4.7/10
I never listen to the site's reviews, mainly only the players. Since we all think alike and trust me, I learned my lesson when I bought Harvest Moon: A Wonderful Life Special Edition. That game lagged SO much. But I didn't listen to players at the time. Heh, now I do.

I think game rankings works very well since it averages major media outlet reviewers scores. The reason I don't like Players reviews is quite simple, a lot of players don't play that many games and aren't as capable of comparing one title compared to other similar titles on the market for comparison. I've played lousy games that are still fun to play, but often times they are horribly flawed and they deserve the terrible ratings they get.Maiku wrote:I usually only look on Gamespot, as IGN tends to give every game a bad rating that I know of.

The problem with player reviews is it turns into a popularity contest more so than it does with reviews from major media outlets. Well advertised successfull franchises are usually going to rate better than smaller games that very well may be a lot better. Additionally you have bandwagoning. Since Sonic is what we're discussing I will use this as a general example. To this day I am sure there is still a very large number of diehard fans of say a company like Sega, or a Series like Sonic, that irregardless of how horrendous the new Sonic title is will look at the game through rose colored glasses because their fans of the company or series rather than rate the title based on its individual merit. While some major media outlets will occasionally do this too, it's not nearly as common.
The rating system itself is flawed and games rarely get actually low reviews (IE below 5 or 50% average) since major media outlets are concerned with getting reviewables, in some cases advertising and press materials from publishers who may blacklist them if they absolutely rip to shreds a particular title.
As mentioned before, this leaves in the defense of "Oh, I gave your game a 5 but 5 is average" when average is really around 7, In any case the reason I don't like player votes is quite simple, the average voter doesn't have nearly as much experience in playing games to determine what's new, bad or original as does the average reviewer at a major publication.
There are obviously lots of gamers who are very experienced, but they are not the majority.

Thanks, I didn't know about that one. Though I'm not sure its what I'm looking for as I'm interested in the storylines from the more recent games (or rather the Sonic Adventure series, the games after those were kinda... lacking.) and it looks like the new one for X-Box and PS3 has that. I just hoped they'd release that for the Wii as well. Sadly it doesn't look like it... I may have to wait until I eventually get either a 360 or a PS3, but that likely won't happen for a year or three...DevNall wrote:There is a Sonic game coming out for the Wii, but it's a different game. I have Sonic the Hedgehog for 360 and I'm 26 and have played every sonic game ever. I was a huge Sega fan when I was younger and I was hoping this would be like Sonic Adventure 1 (my favorite of the new games).
I can answer every question you have on the game. Personally I enjoyed it for a while but never beat it, though I played most of the levels. The story to me was a little to childish so I skipped through all the cinema.
The graphics are really nice. The town you walk around in is like Venice and to me looked really nice. The music in town is great.
When I got to the first level It shot me out like a cannon and I was amazed at teh graphics but as soon as I took over the controls sonic was all over the place. The controls we're extremely jerky and you slide acros the water and have to steer him. I feel like the camera was pushing me the wrong way the whole time and if I barely touched somthing it would make me stop and drown.
I died many times for reasons unknown. I was going through a pipe in a volcano level and twisted upside down then sonic just lost all control and fell for no reason into the lava.
It's an extremely frustrating game but overall the levels are fun and the music to me was the best since Sonic Adventure 1. But I'm a musician so I can enjoy any song.

Much like WD I have played every sonic game made (except for the 32x games for the sega) and I have no intention of letting it stop now. Though it may not be the best or even a really good sonic game, how many bought Lunar DS no matter what the reviews said and other players? Lunar DS had its faults, (in my opinion) but how many hated it so much they wish they didn't spend their money on it? (Im sure there is a thread somewhere about it...) Basicly if you like sonic games expecially any of the 3D sonic games ignore the ratings, play it, and enjoy another sonic game.

It would be nice to see a classic side scrolling Sonic on a new system but with incredibly detailed characters and environments. I'm sure the game would sell better because of it's classic formula and graphic overhaul. The 3D Sonic games just seem to get worse. Sonic and the Secret Rings is supposed to be a better game compared to StH (360/PS3) from past articles I've read.

Since personal preference messes up the possibility of a "perfect review", i suggest renting.exigence wrote:the only reviews i can really take seriously anymore are from my friends, since every gaming magizne has let me down at one point or another, and since tech tv switched over to G4 i cant trust X-play.
