Yeah, that "going to college because I have to" attitude really bugs me. It ruins the experience for everyone else, because after such students reach a certain critical percentage, the professors start dumbing things down for them. I always hated taking CS classes in which the professors would skip really cool stuff because "you'll never need it when you get a job." It's computer science, not computer employment!

Students in their 40s and 50s are my absolute favorites. They work hard, they try to understand the material instead of just memorizing it, and they're truly grateful to be getting an education, as opposed to all the kids who take it for granted.

Vyse, I must fall in between. There is a lot about college I like, and I honestly hope that when I graduate, if I can land a decent job with decent pay, I can start taking classes at the community college for kicks. I'm already eying specific biology, paramedic, firefighter, psychology, photography, martial arts (XD), maybe continue some history classes, and whatever else I feel like taking.

On the flip side, I hate having to take classes that do me no good. I have learned only a little while in College and I'm 3 years in. Math is probably the only subject that teaches any viable information, but as of yet, I haven't used any of it (ever) in the real world, not to mention I forget it all inside a quarter. I'm very poor at math as it is, so it just sucks. English, well, it may have a purpose, but I haven't found it. I keep lagging in those classes because I just get so tired of writing 5 page papers every week, on top of the countless other papers we write in the class itself. That, and currently I'm suffering from major writer's block. =/ I also hate not being able to write a paper on something I already know without having to back it up and go through all the BS trying to find a legit source and properly citing said source.

Granted, things will pick up once I'm done with general courses and get into degree specific courses. Still, I just want the stupid degree so I can get a $30,000+ a year job so I can focus on doing what I want to do.

They don't divide hours the same way everywhere, Monde Luna. Where I went (UT), 12 was the minimum number of hours needed to be considered "full-time" at most colleges, with the typical class being 3 hours, and classes with labs (or Calculus classes) being 4 hours. 18 was the maximum number of hours one could take without overloading. Thus, 15 was a full load, the minimal number of courses one could take and graduate in four years. (Think 15 per semester, for four years; 15x2x4=120.)

From the sounds of it, if her school divides the hours the same way, Jenner is either taking six courses, a few of them labs, or seven courses, with one of them being a lab. It's ambitious, but doable with good planning and discipline.

Jenner, what's your course-load been like in the past?

I am required to take exactly 3 credit hours a semester (i.e. one class). 22 sounds awful.

12 units is the minimum for full time status over here as well. (for semesters not quarters) They capped our max units last semester (due to budgets) to 16 units. I've done 16 before but I would never dream of taking 22 (I also work though). My 1 unit classes were always the most difficult and required the most work.

My second semester at Easy Stoner Community College I took 19 (where 12 was the minimum) But 3 of the classes were English Classes ( My strongest subject, two 4 credit lit classes, and one 3 credit poetry class) So it was a breeze.

This time I'm taking things like Social Psych, Traditions, etc. Nothing I can just sleep through and get A's in. I'll probably wind up dying.
