Grand replay of the entire series

This board is for general discussion of Lunar. Especially things such as Lunar merchandise, general discussions about the story that span more than one game, etc.

Grand replay of the entire series

Post by Kizyr »

Hey y'all, I'm considering doing a grand replay of all of Lunar sometime very soon, through each game and language with a few exceptions (e.g., direct ports like the Windows SSS or PSP EBC, ones I don't have like SSS Touch, or ones I don't understand like SSS Korean version).

I'm no YouTuber and actually doing something like recording and editing video, or even a lot of screenshots for anything besides the Sega CD games, is a huge time investment that I can't do. But aside from that, what would people find interesting? Observations, notes, burning questions, etc.

To note, the last time I did this systematically, it's what let me create the Japanese-to-English differences pages on LunarNET. This time around my Japanese is at parity with English so it'll take me less time plus I'm less likely to miss details.

Here are the games btw:
- SCD: TSS Japanese, TSS English
- SCD: EB Japanese, EB English
- GG: Walking School
- SAT: Magical School Lunar
- SAT: SSS Japanese (skipping MPEG version because I don't have the cart)
- SAT: EBC Japanese
- PS1: SSS Japanese, SSS English
- PS1: EBC Japanese, EBC English (I may skip EBC Japanese due to equivalence with SAT version)
- GBA: Lunar Legend
- DS: Dragon Song Japanese, Dragon Song English
- PSP: Silver Star Harmony Japanese, Silver Star Harmony English
- All The Lunar (not a game but still haven't explored every nook yet)

I’m partial to the WD translation just cause it’s the one I grew up with and have played a lot- but I think in the Making of they pretty much said when it came to the script they scrapped the Japanese text and just sorta made up their own I’m guessing when it came to the NPCs the plot they had to follow. I guess I’m kinda curious what the villagers/townspeople had said in the Japanese ver.? (Zach had mentioned it was like random punny jokes) Also which parts of the WD dialogue had been used in latter versions. I was sleeping last night and this post came to mind, hehe.

^ I wouldn't want you to have to exhaustively go through the script for the ways jokes are translated, but even a few examples for how a joke seems to be rendered would be interesting to me from a translation perspective. I'm personally curious about that thanks to my recent work reading literary translations (like Emily Wilson's version of The Odyssey). I also think that localization will become a contentious topic again with the remasters coming out, so having some examples of more trivial differences could help people better understand that, whatever one thinks of the jokes in English, the localization was done in good faith.

I don't know much else to ask for. I think some things are a matter for what you find fascinating and want to share; I'll always be open to that.
