I tend to insist on pluralizing it in the English mode, octopuses... but that's mainly because I don't think it's necessary to go to a previous language in order to get the proper declension of a word. If it did, then "octopi" would also make some sense since at one point in its history, it was a Latin word.
Plus, trying to derive the original formation again using English words, it would be easy to form "octopode" from "octopodes." Confusions better avoided.
