Resigned from Otakon Staff
Well, mostly because I kinda got fed up with a lot of the behind-the-scenes stuff that goes on with Otakon staff, I resigned from Otakon's staff earlier this week. Apparently, only two other staffers gave a rat's ass (at least among those that are likely to know about it), so it's not like I'll be missed that much.
That said, it does mean that I won't have quite the same strings to pull in the future to guarantee a Lunar panel (I was reminded of this after reading the recap of this year's panel). However, at least for next year, I'll still have some unofficial connections to panels staff, so maybe I might be able to still get some panel favors done.

Yeah, I resigned. There was a lot of stuff going on behind the scenes (as well as a couple instances where I felt personally slighted) that made me feel like I just didn't want to be on Otakon staff anymore.
I have actually applied to staff another con (I figure I can handle staffing one con a year, but that's it ), but since it's not in the DC area, I doubt anyone from this year's Lunar panel would be able to attend a Lunar panel at said other con (which I'd rather not mention until I know if I got in or not -- don't want to jinx it).

LOL, no, it's an existing con, although I have joked about creating a "LunarCon" at some point.

Hey Lou, it sucks to hear that, but I don't blame you. Otakon has gotten so impersonal I get the impression it's more about what Otakon wants than what the fans want... if it just so happens what Otakon wants the fans do to, then great. I just think it's gotten way too big and it's about money now :\
A LunarCon would be so awesome... I want to go to the LunarCon... Would there be an Artist Alley there? Cuz I'd totally want a table.

I can say this about Otakon -- it's honestly not about money because no one actually makes money off the con, other than perhaps the hired security staff and the hired lawyer and accountant. However, egos do come into play, and there have been quite a few upper-level staffers who accept high level positions because it looks good on a resume and not because they actually want to do something for the fans.PrettyGirlJean wrote:Hey Lou, it sucks to hear that, but I don't blame you. Still, there are a few staffers who do know that they exist primary to serve the fans, and they on occasion post reminders to that effect on the staff BBS. I know that in my case, I did my best to serve the fans when I was panels coordinator -- both fans attending the con in order to give them a good, varied panel selection as well as fans applying for panels. I got quite a few complements from panelists last year and even heard some mention "Where's Lou? We miss Lou!" before they realized that I was still around, just not running the show. Heh, even at a lower position, they still loved the help/support I provided.
Anyway, I have a phone interview to be panels coordinator at the other con I mentioned later today. Wish me luck.
Of course there would be an Arist Alley there. Actually, it's kinda funny -- the first time I met Nadia, Mia_Ausa, and couple of the other old-time Lunar fans from the Lunar mailing list, we jokingly referred to the meeting as "LunarCon," even though we were just hanging out at Harvard Square.PrettyGirlJean wrote:A LunarCon would be so awesome... Well, I had my interview for the staff position at this other con a couple days ago. It went very well, although I haven't gotten word back as to whether or not I'll get the position. I'll announce what con if/when I do get the position.
