Honestly, I don't understand the whole Christmas vs Holiday arguement.

I am so insulted!

There isn't any Christmas vs Holiday argument. It's made-up controversy. I just like saying Happy Holidays 'cause it's alliterative.

well, you know, at some point someone pointed out to businesses that not everyone celebrates christmas. the businesses went "oops! well, we don't want to alienate anyone with money--we'll just say happy holidays."

and then the fussier christians flipped their dragon poop and started screaming about the "war on christmas." it's part of their usually latent xenophobia. the part that comes out when it's time to give other groups civil rights.

pardon my cynicism. i spent half my christmas with such people, and found myself in a shameful silence whenever i heard a bigoted remark. so i'm a bit peeved at myself.

Now that's really funny. There's a fundamentalist christian on another board that I post on that also claims to be a dragon. (seriously.)

I never understood it when people always say to "keep Christ in christmas." What's that supposed to mean for non-chistians? Do they expect us all to magically convert (that would be shoving their religion on us) or just have a day off with no meaning whatsoever?

Maybe a day off spent with family DOES mean something to the rest of us.

I work at one of those places, which is were I'm pretty sick of it. Honestly, I don't care. Holiday, christmas. I never celebrated christmas as a religious Holiday anyway, rather I celebrated it as a family/peace on earth holiday. With gifts.

I think they take it too far sometimes with that saying, but I understand the point. Christmas was meant to celebrate the birth of Christ. Christians don't celebrate Hannukah or Ramadan, because we're not Jewish or Muslim. It seems strange that non-Christians would want to observe Christmas, which is meant to be a day to celebrate the birth of the Christ-child. However, as a Christian, it makes no difference to me if a non-Christian celebrates with their family on the day. It's not like it changes my own views on why I celebrate the day.

Well, there's always the option of not celebrating it, not celebrating the religious part, or just doing whatever you want. The thing is, Christmas in this country has always been celebrated alongside the commercial aspect of it, so there's no strong history of it being an overly religious holiday. I agree with the idea of keeping Christ in Christmas insofar as reducing the commercialism of it (since I think the consumerism's gotten out of hand), but that doesn't have anything to do with forcing other people to celebrate it. I think the thing there is, keep Christ in Christmas.

Nobody said keep Christ in Kwanza. Nobody said keep Christ in Hanuka. Nobody said keep Christ in Ramadan.

Keep Christ in Christmas is aimed primarily at those people who like Santa, trees, and presents, but not nativity scenes. (Note the Kwanza/Hanuka/Ramadan people wouldn't have trees and presents and Santa)

Ok, most of that post didn't make sense. Though I think I get the point of your last sentence.

Though, I do want to point out that it's kind of funny to group together Ramadan with the other holidays, considering that it was over 3 months ago. KF

Does it fluctuate like Easter does? I thought I remember it being celebrated in November a few years back.
