Sorry, I'm an Alex fan.
I guess there's just really such a thing as affinity towards certain set of characters. I played SSSC first, and it got me hooked, so I suppose it's quite natural that I'm more inclined towards their bunch. I don't mean, however, that I don't like the EBC group. They're very much loved by me as well.
Alex's silence has never bothered me, though my friends and I joke about it quite a lot. Because if you really take a look at him, he's not totally silent with just the "..."s. He's quite the thinker, he just doesn't want to voice his thoughts too much and leaves the noise-making to the other, already-noisy party members (minus Mia). And when he has to talk, he talks.
(And, just a little side-note, does anyone else besides me thinks he talks a bit more in LL than SSSC? )
I like Hiro as well, but he's just not the protagonist I fell in love with. Sure, he was put into the situation without really wanting to be there, unlike Alex who wanted adventures in the first place, but it was Alex's conflict with himself, as to his duty to the world and to the woman he loves, that well, kinda got me. He didn't see a grand battle with the world's fate (and that of his love's) hanging in the balance, did he? I'm a sucker for things like that.
And I'm probably not making sense, so I'll shut up now.

I think a lot of the "..." jokes originate from TSS for Sega CD. I swear the guy has a dozen real lines in the game...tops!Kazie Solo wrote:Alex's silence has never bothered me, though my friends and I joke about it quite a lot. I wouldn't say that at all. You make some really good points about SSSC that really helped Alex develop more as a character. Adding in that internal conflict(which is oddly parallel to Lucia's) really spices up the story and makes Alex grow beyond just trying to save the day.
When I think of TSS, I never see Alex(or anyone else for that matter) even think of an alternative to saving Luna. The only choice was for Alex to help her remember; killing her wasn't even an option I remember seeing.

Absolutely. In SSSC, in that little spell Xenobia casted on them and made them confront their "inner selves"--
Alex's "inner self" (cut out some of the other things he said): Luna is beyond your reach! If we try to pursue her, we'll be killed as well! Luna betrayed us. Run away before it's too late for both of us!
Alex: I won't run away until I save her! No matter what it takes, no matter how far! I WILL save her!
Though, Hiro, too, went beyond the ends of the earth to get to Lucia.

I was speaking in terms of the original Lunar: The Silver Star for the Sega CD, not SSSC for Playstation. Although, your above example is yet more proof that in SSSC Alex faces just that much more internal conflict than Alex in TSS for Sega CD.

Oh, my bad. I'm sorry, I overlooked the TSS bit. But yeah, there's a lot of that conflict in SSSC, and in LL, too. So he probably doesn't talk much cuz he's busy thinking of the answer to that mind-boggling question, ne?

Kazie, you said it best in your first post! I feel the same way about SSSC and EBC. I did enjoy EB but SSS really stuck with me, I found myself really missing the first cast when I played the second game, to the point that when Ronfar would get new "Jessie" spells I'd grin and say "Jessie be with you!" (not at all blasphomous I assure you... =P ) Not to mention my absolute obession with the two characters found in my icon. I really missed them and was saddened to learn Vane was still in ruins... I really thought Mia (especially) and Nash would have made some progress...
Gah! I digress! Er... Go Alex!!

Well, a thousand years have passed, plenty of time for anything to go to ruins. At least people were still living there. I always figured that Mia and Nash succeeded in reviving the magic guild, and opened it to everyone. After several hundred years, if magic was no longer an elite skill and many people knew it, the funding and need for a school like Vane may just have disappeared.YoshiMars wrote:I really missed them and was saddened to learn Vane was still in ruins... As for the whole flying thing, as far as I can remember, it really only served two purposes - one, to defend the Sanctuary, (is that what it was called?) and two, to maintain Vane's elite image. There would obviously be no use for the second, and the first had been used up, so it makes sense to me that it's on the ground.
Of course, this is all total conjecture....
Actually, going more on that path, I've always wondered if perhaps there was a dark age somewhere between the events of the first and second games? It seems to me that not only is the world in TSS/SSSC more technologically advanced (Myght's tower, the airship, the grindery...etc) but perhaps a bit more connected and centralized.
Just a thought of course - for one thing, I haven't read any of the manga, so I don't really know a lot of the outlying material. I also can't seem to remember any mention of something like that in any of the games, but just figured I'd bring it up.
Finally, as for Alex and Hiro? Eh, I'm fond of them both, and I wouldn't want to choose either, hence why I haven't voted.

I was actually under the impression that the reason Vane fell back into disrepair is because of NeoVane.Agawa wrote:Well, a thousand years have passed, plenty of time for anything to go to ruins. Yeah, me too! All over EBC I was trying to look for a mention of any of the SSSC cast, about their exploits - or just anything really - but I guess after a thousand years the legend of the Five Heroes just kinda faded away. So when a person in Meribia said something about Jessica, or when I came across that recording in the ruins with the SSSC cast and Luna's recorded message to Lucia, or whenever Nall says something about Alex and his friends, I either go really hyper or really emotional.YoshiMars wrote:I did enjoy EB but SSS really stuck with me, I found myself really missing the first cast when I played the second game, to the point that when Ronfar would get new "Jessie" spells I'd grin and say "Jessie be with you!" I believe there was; after all, it's a thousand years, so much can happen. And I also read somewhere (I forgot where that was, I'll look it up again and post back here when I do) that Nall, before settling in Taben's Peak with all those kids, went on an adventure that rivaled Alex's in TSS/SSSC. Maybe there was another war or another crisis. Well, other than Nall (and the brilliant minds behind these games), we'll never know... I guess.Agawa wrote:I've always wondered if perhaps there was a dark age somewhere between the events of the first and second games? I wasn't too concerned with it still being on the ground, it was more that it was forgotten and in disrepair. Though I could believe in a "dark ages" sort of thing happening between SSS and EB... I think you might be on to something there.
Though that didn't change my dissapointment. I still believe that Nash and Mia would have gotten somewhere on it, even though a thousand years had passed I recall still expecting to see a rejuvinated Vane, open to everyone like Mia wanted. Actually, come to think of it, I remember being dissapointed about that too. Why was Vane not accepting people that wanted to learn in the first place? It was made out to be like a new idea when Lemina and the others decided to open it up to the public... I understand that was a new thing for Neo-Vane but it was supposed to be that way in the original city. Or at least that's what Mia and Nash were working for... at least in my opinion... I was just saddened by how things turned out in EB.
That too could have been another reason I felt a bit... detached... from EB, I don't know.
One last thing... of Vane was ever truly rebuilt (not needing to be in the air) then why would Neo-Vane have been nesisary? Seems to me that the existance of Neo-Vane means Nash and Mia really didn't accomplish what they set out to do, and I don't like to believe that. I doubt very much that either would give up on Vane... ever. I think I'm jumping back to the "dark ages" thing as that could have had some regretable effects on the rebuilding efforts after Nash and Mia were gone. That I could believe...
Sorry to ramble... I type as I think. Apologies if this seems fragmented.

I made a new thread for this whole Vane/history discussion which is here:

Otherwise, we'd be taking over this poor thread.

I felt the same way. Poor Kyle was barely mentioned anywhere, as I remember. Still, I don't feel a greater connection to the SSSC/TSS cast than the EB one. It just makes me feel a bit sad to think of them long gone, with decades worth of history between.Kazie Solo wrote: Yeah, me too! Thanks for the post move! I'll be there next!
I agree with the above post, in that I really got emotional when anyone of the five heros was mentioned. I really thought thier legened would have still been around, I mean heck, in the game you hear of the four heros...

He could've been more social if those who made the game wanted him to. After all, in Legend he spoke more often than usual.
